Every time we step outside for another crossdresser public adventure there is no script so surprises will come your way. On our San Francisco Crossdressing trips, we always stayed at the Warwick Regis Hotel where we had a great relationship with the management and staff. It was a boutique hotel just two blocks off Union Square and because they only had 75 rooms relatively private. Keep in mind this was about 25 years ago, so I was not so brave as I am now and the environment for Crossdressers was very different. San Francisco was far and away the friendliest city for Crossdressers and non-conforming people in general so many great memories were experienced there.
We enjoyed great treatment at all of the high-end restaurants and were treated well for the most part pretty much everywhere with only one exception. I cannot remember the restaurant’s name, but it started with an “M” and our service was very bad with the waiters snickering back and forth about us I assumed. Our meal took forever to get there which was pissing me off and I came up with a plan but chickened out. I was going to order a pizza and have it delivered to me at the restaurant which I figured would draw attention to our problem and piss off the manager to boot. I settled for the official Micki Finn Hex which I put on them, and they are no longer in business. The hex works every time!

One constant that we never deviated from was ending each evening at the Redwood room across from our hotel in the Clift hotel. I was told one of the guys from Studio 54 in New York was the owner of either the hotel or the Redwood Room. It was full of wannabes but also had some genuine celebrities once in a while too. Knowing the doorman who took a liking to us had many benefits including getting in to a private party one night. I have no idea who the guy was, but he rented the entire Redwood Room and through the best costume party I have ever seen. Costumes right out of a Hollywood wardrobe department not Amazon stuff. Free food and drink for everyone inside which was fun.

One particular night started like all the others walking across the street after dinner past all the people waiting in line outside to get in the Redwood Room. Turning past the first person in line I greeted the doorman by name and strode past as he welcomed me by name welcoming me back. Those waiting in line thought we must be somebody important which, I agree with but not like they thought.

Once inside we found a table, and I got purse duty so the others could go mingle with the civilians. As I sat there people watching I noticed something very different from our other visits. I was in a land of giants like a midget in a forest because there was a ton of huge guys in there. It wasn’t like our normal visits because something was definitely going on like a bachelor party or something, but they weren’t rowdy or loud. I kept watching then noticed a very attractive woman walking across the room headed right for me. She had a big smile on her face that made me a little nervous at first thinking she was laughing about the hilarious insult she planned to deliver to me.
I was wrong as usual because she was very complimentary and gave us credit for making her night. She said her friends talked her into going out that night which, she did not want to do. She was glad they talked her into it because she said watching us strut down the street and walk into the bar changed her mood immediately. Naturally she had questions, so the Q & A commenced right away, and we talked for quite a while until her boyfriend finally came over. Wrong again Micki, he was very friendly and entered in but not at her level of enthusiasm and left after a few minutes. She eventually said she needed to rejoin her group giving me a hug and compliment as she left. She said I looked great and reminded her of Barbera Bush and I thanked her. Then I got to thinking Barbara Bush was the mother of President Bush who was born in 1925. Do I look that old? I’m taking it as a compliment because she was so nice to me and had a lot to drink!
My shift as purse monitor came to an end as my relief arrived so I took off to recon the room and see what is going on with all of the giants wandering around. They were even bigger when I was walking around them and not just tall but thick too in many cases. Eventually I found myself at the far end of the bar going through the typical ignore the customer tradition popular at the time. They did it to everyone so nothing to do with us, it was an equal opportunity snub extended to everyone. BFF Ashley soon joined me being snubbed also. I told her I would bring our drinks over to the table once my luck improved so she could leave. She asked a question before she departed pointing to a guy across the room which she thought might be Jeff Garcia the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers. I told her no, the guy was too short, and she went back to the table, and I finally got our drinks.

The Redwood Room in those days played Budda music loudly over speakers so conversation was challenging but the crowd was still shoulder to shoulder. With drinks in hand I started across the room saying excuse me a couple of hundred times as I tried not to spill the drinks. About halfway across the room as people moved to accommodate me, I came face to face, eye to eye, with the guy Ashley was asking about. It turned out he wasn’t short at all just looked that way next to all the giants in the room, so I asked Ashley’s question. Hi, are you Jeff Garcia? He kind of looked down awkwardly like he was kind of shy about it and said yes, he was. I told him how much my wife and I enjoyed watching him play over the years. He was a gentleman and thanked me then I got back to my drink delivery assignment. I’ll never know if it was really him, but it would explain all of the really big guys who looked like football players and makes for a good story.
I told Ashly she was right and that he actually is kind shy and not very talkative. Then I realized that I had forgotten that I was dressed as a woman talking to a quarterback that could endure quite a bit of razzing in the locker room next game.
Either way if it was him, he handled the situation with class and was a gentleman all the way.
