I get some very nice comments about how fearless I am going out in public anywhere anytime. People think I just got dressed one day walked out the door and it was HELLO WORLD I own you. Nope! That is not my story, in reality I went through many stages just like pretty much everyone. Where I am today was the result of little victories over my fear and paranoia gaining confidence over the years. Before I started going out in public dressed as a woman there was a lot of planning. Keep in mind it was the late 1980’s and there were no Crossdresser or Trans organizations or an internet to find them. It was like gum shoe detective work beating the bushes. I was in outside sales so had the freedom to check out places in the LA Orange County area.
On a television talk show like Phil Donohue or Sally Jesse Raphael before Oprah they had Mistress Antionette who was a dominatrix with a store in Orange California. She said the had adult and fetish books along with bondage toys and catered to many fringe groups. In those days you could not get much more fringe than crossdressers because they were invisible. I went by and checked them out buying a copy of TV Epic magazine the TV was the abbreviation everyone used in those day for Transvestite. It was full of personal ads and stories about crossdressing along with resources for TV’s. I scheduled myself in that area to coincide when the new issue cam out so I could gain knowledge. I did that for several years and then one day I noticed a stack of business cards by the cash register for Wigs By Yolanda. I slyly palmed one of the cards when I left with my magazine.
Cell phones had not been invented yet and very few people had car phones in those days so I had to find a payphone that nobody had vandalized or used as a toilet to call the wig shop. I called and ask for Yolanda and was told there was no Yolanda but I am Nancy and I own Yolanda’s. She asked immediately if I was a TV and I nervously said yes being somewhat confident I would not be discovered as I lived 40 miles from her. I went over to her shop which was a her home in a converted garage to look at some wigs but she had very few. I did not buy anything but stopped by the chat when I was in town to buy my magazine every couple of months. I think TV Epic was published every other month.
Almost from the minute we met Nancy asked me if I went out and belonged to a group I answered no to both. She told me about a crossdressing group that met the third Saturday each month and I should come meet the other crossdressers there. It is open to anyone just show up pay your 10 dollars and enjoy your pizza and diet coke. It was held at a hotel slightly closer to my house. I went home and told my wife I wanted to go to a meeting and meet other people like me. She was not enthused and did not say no but complained that this thing of mine was escalating. Her main argument was that I never mentioned socializing with other crossdressers when I first told her about my crossdressing years ago. My explanation was that I did not know where to find any thinking I was the only in the world for so many years. So once I stumbled on the group meeting I naturally wanted meet others like me. We talked about it on and off for about a year before she finally gave me the go ahead provided I get a room and stay the night. She did not want me driving while wearing women’s clothes.
Now with her support I had to figure out how I was going to approach going to my first meeting. I had a wig but had to buy makeup and some other clothes borrowing a purse from my wife. Armed only with the time and place that the group (Powder Puffs Of Orange County) met I checked it out. They met at a Best Western Hotel where two freeways crossed at the LA and Orange County line. I decided to RECON the place telling the manager that I was planning a family reunion and was looking for a place for everyone to stay. He happily gave me a tour of the whole place but what I was really interested in was how many meeting rooms they had. Once I found out there was only one I asked to see it and noted the numbers of the rooms close by. My plan was to request one of those rooms so I would be just steps from the meeting minimizing the chances of running into anyone. How is that for a fearless crossdresser?

A month later I reserved a room about 4 down from the meeting room and later found out the group PPOC rented the 1st two rooms so people to change who could not dress at home. That’s why the closest I would ever get was 3 away. On the big day I drove to the hotel unloaded my car and started making Micki up. I had very little experience with makeup so everything took longer than expected and I had to start over sever al times. I finally felt ready to go so I got my purse together checked to make sure I had my metal key for the 40th time and placed my hand on the doorknob.

My first meeting was in Burbank in 1980 at the Tri – ess I can’t remember the name of the hotel , that was a little nerve racking , that is where I met Virginia Prince , that’s where I learned about Cinema Secrets , now look at us
I am betting it was the Burbank Holiday Inn where they held the first California Dreaming. Yep! We have come a long way baby!
wait a minute-this sounds like my story! (just kidding but true)
I remember watching those shows as well and finding out I wasn’t alone in my feelings
