The Friday before our regular monthly meeting started out very mellow with my friend Sherri and I going out to dinner at one of our Long Beach favorites. I took my normal seat in the UBER car up front next to the driver so I could move the seat forward giving Sherri some extra legroom for her bad knee. Our driver spoke broken English and I enquired where he was from thinking it was China. I guessed right, he said he was from Shenzhen which started an international dialog because between Sherri and I we have been to 5 or six cities in China. I am not sure how much of the conversation that he really understood but he definitely had an interesting experience to share with his friends.

The fun started when my friend and owner of the restaurant came over to say hello followed by one of the regular customers. I can’t say for sure but the woman on my left who was part of the two couples found reasons to talk to me. Starting by asking of her coat that was between us was OK there as in not encroaching on my space. I answered no as it wasn’t thinking it had been there since I sat down anyway so was not an issue. Next when the bus boy took her fork away with her salad she asked if she could borrow one of mine and I gladly accommodated her. We now had bonded and I knew she was intrigued and most likely had hordes of questions. Unfortunately her gentleman friend did also and got up from his seat and moved over to our side and sat between us facing her with his back to me. I am sorry that we did not have the opportunity to talk because I would love to answer her questions but, maybe another time.
I have encountered situations like this over the years when a women’s curiosity increases but their man wants nothing to do with it. I have no doubt if it was two women having dinner without the guys we would have had a great conversation. The fact that Sherri and I make no attempt to change our voices combined with our conversation typically non girly can be a magnate for them.
We finished our dinner then Sherri visited the ladies room while I moved over to the bar getting us a couple of seats next to a young couple that had just sat down. I sat next to the woman but made no effort to engage them in conversation using my horse whisperer technique. Shortly after Sherri returned I went to the ladies room and upon returning found Sherri fully engaged in conversation with the couple. What followed was a really fun discussion of many topics and lots of laughs and I truly think they forgot we we were crossdressers or at least it no longer mattered.
Around 10 PM we were joined by our good friends and fellow CHIC members Tonya & wife Nell which is where my memory starts to get a little fuzzy. We introduced Tonya and Nell to our new friends and ordered more drinks enjoying more laughs. I know we eventually made it back to our hotel albeit after midnight and were fortunate the security guard who knows us opened the door so we did not have to fumble for our keys.
